Anti Leprosy Day.. sharing experience

On every last Sunday of January, Anti - Leprosy Day is observed throughout the world, while in India it is on every 30th  January - the "Martyrs Day", the day the Great Soul, Mahatma Gandhi left the world. It was Raoul Follereau who initiated the idea of observing "Anti- Leprosy Day" our inspiration after who AIFO (Associazione Italiana Amici Di Raoul Follereau) came into existence now celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
I am working in the field of leprosy since 1983 (till date) and this particular day made me very sad, but last year, there was a change. My "Boss" Mr.M.V.Jose (also my trainee in leprosy) last year called me and said, shall we make a difference and there was a change, an enchanting change indeed. It was instead Anti- Leprosy Day a Leprosy Day Celebrations. Nearing about a hundred persons affected due to leprosy where encouraged to gather at "Sumanahalli" a centre for leprosy related activities in Bangalore (our partners) - it was all celebrations. The programme was all theirs, during which they shared their happiness, joy, and also incidents which was sad. They shared their experiences how they could over come (over coming), while occasionally they also gave us (Staff, visitors, students and others) a chance to participate. There where songs and dance all the way to end with a nice lunch. We all parted with a heart feeling for the next.
The next year - 2012 plan: We are planning to celebrate in the North East, Tezpur District in the State of Assam. A small footwear unit will be established, which is expected to provide special footwear, with a hope to expand for better coverage, and following will be the expected "Celebrations". I beg, pray for your kind wishes to make this event successful, while Sumanahalli will continue with the changed approach.
And meanwhile, my dear readers (friends) please have a small place in your heart for all people affected due to leprosy, remembering that they are persons. Their dignity and deserved Rights should be provided and preserved. Keep tasting bitter turns out to be sweet, observing things which looks ugly becomes beautiful. Do not feel frightened, extend your feelings and hands to support and hope for a day grand children will feel proud off, with a world without Leprosy.

Where is the end, will it ever end... that is for the sea. But for leprosy there should be an end - the misery, stigma and discrimination will end... it needs communications and participation.
Remember to remember "Leprosy Day .. with a change if possible participate last Sunday-29th of January 2012 ..30th January 2012 (India) if possible participate.
Keep in touch....
Thank you
Manimozhi
